Two Villages, Two Layout Traditions
Rockton's two founding settlements -- Stephen Mack Jr.'s river-confluence Macktown and William Talcott's water-power-driven east-side village, founded the same year in 1835 and merged after an 1851 bridge washout -- grew up independently before incorporating together in 1872.
A Merger That Still Shows Up in the Layout
Because the two halves developed on their own before joining, original kitchen layouts in the oldest Macktown-descended lots don't necessarily match the Talcott-side core nearby, even on adjoining streets.
